Intel's 1998 Head Count Reduction Fiasco

Liar, Liar Barrett’s Pants Are On Fire

On March 9, 2001, Intel released a long internal communiqué about the disappointing first quarter’s performance and a gloomy future business outlook.  In the midst of all the financial and business gobbledygook they had buried the following excerpt:

Additionally, the company expects to reduce headcount by approximately 5,000 people over the next 9 months, predominantly through attrition; There May be some localized workforce reductions. As such reductions occur, Attempts will be made to place effected employees in other parts of the Company. The planned reduction excludes any headcount additions from potential, future acquisitions.

Watch out folks, this is bad news!  We have heard this kind of rhetoric; it is loaded with hidden agendas!

As we have commented in this page, the last time that we have heard such double-talk from Intel and its fearless leader was in 1998.  Back then Mr. Barrett and his gang announced and claimed that they’ll reduce the headcount by 3,000.  In 98’s fiasco initially we estimated that Intel would terminate 6,000 employees.  By the time that Barrett and his managers/thugs were done over 10,000 Intel employees were terminated, over 3X the number of employees which Mr. Barrett had initially said would be losing their jobs.

In his February 19, 2001’s memo (see below) to all Intel employees Mr. Barrett talks about the headcount reduction but he does not mention that he wants to get rid of 5,000 employees. There is no doubt that this headcount reduction plan has been planned months in advance.  Deviously he intended to just give part of the bad news, with the intent of preparing Intel employees for yesterday’s doom and gloom.

Based on Intel’s historical actions and bad faith intentions we predict that this time they have planned to get rid of 12-15,000 employees.  Barrett who is pretentiously portrayed as a fearless leader, did not have enough courage to at least tell his acclaimed “greatest asset” (employees) that he wants to target 5,000 of them for termination, let alone his real intention, which is termination of thousands more employees.

As always we depend on you to report to us, anonymously if you wish, the developments inside Intel during this crucial time.  As in 1998 we promise you to keep your identity strictly confidential.  Together we can keep the crooked executives of Intel in line and influence them to be more honest than their corrupt nature would otherwise allow them to be.

You report, we publish and be assured that perseverance and patience will pay and together we can prevail over these evils.

What You Can Expect:

Intel’s main intention is to do a major cleanup.  Therefore, employees in the following categories need to be on alert and watch their back constantly:

  1. Those of you over age of 40.
  2. Those of you who have reached to the top of your pay scale.
  3. Employees that have medical conditions which prevent them from working 12 hours per day.
  4. Employees that have family members with severe medical conditions.
  5. Those of you who have fallen out of your superior’s favor.
  6. Those of you who are two years away from your early retirement time.

Craig Barrett and Andy Grove and the other crooked Intel executives have devised this inhumane and devious plan to brutally target and to mercilessly terminate you just to steal your years of invested interest in Intel.  You’ll see that they will destroy the career of thousands of innocent employees, destroy their families and their wealth.

The sad part is that they reward the above heroic act by giving themselves bigger bonuses at the end of the year.  They are such cowards that they do not tell you and the public the truth.  In fact their action is so deplorable and disgusting that they do not dare be truthful about it.

You will be a victim if you allow a bunch of low lives to be the victors.

What Can You Do:

You are safe here with us; we are here just to help you. If you are still worried and concerned about your identity you can send any kind of information you like in regular mail to us in an envelope with no return address.

If you want to teach Intel’s executive a lesson that they never forget help us facilitate, coordinate and organize class action lawsuits against Intel.  Do not sit on the sidelines and watch these evil criminals destroy people’s lives and get away with it.

We (FACE Intel) are in the best position to gather the information, communicate with all class action members, build an indisputable package of evidence, find the most qualified and powerful law firm (we have several to chose from) and initiate the CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT(s).  This is the only way to get compensation for the victims, beat the arrogance out of Intel’s executives and in true sense of the words make “Intel An Employee Friendly Company” and consequently only then “A Great Place To Work”.

 A Message From Craig Barrett

(This is the exact message that was distributed worldwide inside Intel on 2-19-01)

"Intel is initiating significant cost-saving measures in 2001."

"As we said at the beginning of the quarter, market conditions for the technology industry have deteriorated. At this time, it is uncertain when we will see improvement. Today we are taking significant cost-cutting steps designed to help us weather this downturn in our business, while enabling Intel to continue aggressive investment in its future growth.

"We are not alone in facing difficult economic conditions. The global slowdown is now forcing many of our competitors and customers to also initiate significant cost-saving measures.

"We must be serious about reducing expenses while continuing to channel our resources into the development of new technologies and products that will position us as a strong and competitive global leader. It is unclear how long the downturn will last. When the economy recovers, we must be ready. Continuing our investments in new capacity and technology research & development can help Intel emerge even stronger than before.

"Accordingly, we must act immediately and look into all our own organizations for ways to reduce expenses while not affecting core operations. To provide a framework for these cost-reductions, and to achieve savings for Intel in the hundreds of millions of dollars, we will take the following steps

1) "We are modifying the schedule for pay increases as a result of focal reviews for 2001. Employees grade 10 and below will get half of their increases in April 2001 (the normal time); we expect the other half of the increase to be granted in October 2001, depending on a review of business conditions. Employees grade 11 and above will not receive any increase until our financial results improve. We will assess the situation in October.

2) "Exempt employees who have not yet ordered their PCs under the Intel® Home PC program will be required to wait until 2002 to place their orders. Additionally, non-exempt employees can volunteer to delay placing their orders until 2002.

3) "We have taken a goal to reduce discretionary spending by about 30 percent. That includes spending on such items as travel, overtime, relocation and consulting costs. Additionally, we will limit external hiring to about 2% - 3% and reduce headcount through attrition rather than layoffs. Specific group-level targets will be published separately within each business unit."

"As we take these steps to reduce short-term expenses, we also remain committed to rewarding employees over the long term. I am in the process of taking a proposal to the Board of Directors for some additional stock option grants. The additional options are related to those granted since late 1999 with prices above the current market average. Details will be made available as soon as we have an approved package.

"The cost-savings steps are not pleasant, and the decision to take them was examined carefully by the Executive Staff. Moreover, if these measures are to succeed, everyone must do their part to examine every expense and save wherever possible. This task is not an easy one, but the strategy will pay off in a strong rebound for Intel as we come out of this difficult period.

"It's important for all of you to know that economic downturns are an expected part of doing business. Intel has gone through difficult periods throughout its history, only to emerge in a position of strength. If we focus on operational excellence and maintain our resolve to develop new products and new technologies while providing superb service to our customers, I have every reason to believe Intel will emerge stronger and better than ever.

"Thank you for your cooperation."

Intel's lies about Attrition :

In 1998 Mr. Craig Barrett announced that Intel would layoff 3,000 employees.

We at FACE Intel guesstimated that Intel through various means would terminate about 6,000 employees (www.faceintel.com/layoffs.htm). We have to admit that we were proved to be wrong. Intel actually got rid of over 10,000 employees.

In 1998 as Intel was brutally targeting, forcing out or terminating innocent employees, several Intel executives on multiple occasions, using the national media, shamelessly claimed that Intel will layoff only 3,000 employees.  All of those Intel employees who lost their jobs, for years were falsely by Intel put under the impression that “Intel is a great place to work”.  Also they were made to believe that “Employees are Intel’s greatest assets”.  But when they faced the reality it was too late and too painful.

Mr. Barrett in his black announcement of 1998 mentioned that Intel would reduce headcount by "Attrition”.

We published the definition of “Attrition” per the Merriam-Webster dictionary:

  1. A reduction in numbers usually as a result of resignation, retirement or death.

  2. The act of weakening or exhausting by constant harassment, abuse or attack.

Mr. Barrett intentionally implied that the headcount reduction would be the result of resignation or retirement, which was totally deceitful and he had a very destructive plan in mind.  By the time that Intel was done with its attrition process in 1998 we all learned that Mr. Barrett premeditatedly deceived everyone at Intel and the public outside.

Intel actually used the second meaning of "Attrition".  They targeted a number of employees, and then used continual harassment techniques to force out or terminate several thousand of these individuals. Some of these employees whom were intimidated and beaten down accepted a Voluntary Separation Package, (VSP) and left Intel.

Employees leaving Intel under such conditions cannot be counted as attrition, as they were manipulated, enticed and intimidated into leaving. Out of fear, these employees left Intel after years of company service. In so doing, these employees left behind numerous invested interests, these include: stock option packages which only they could exercise at the rate of 1/5 each year over the next 5 years that they remained employed by Intel. The dollar value of the VSP that Intel provided to these employees was miniscule when compared to what they had given up in unrealized stock options.  In some cases the VSP package was worth 1/100th of what the stock options value would have been.  In other cases the disparity was worse, the VSP being worth 1/1000 of what would have been realized in stock options gains.

Stock options at Intel are always spread out five years into the future and are dangled like a carrot to entice Intel employees.  Therefore, when there is a headcount reduction by "Attrition" per Intel's terms, Intel will always be the Victor and employees the Victim

Mr. Barrett’s Intel-wide announcement (above) of February 19, 2001 is reminiscent of his announcement in 1998.  Again he is using the infamous term of “Attrition” as a mean to reduce headcount.  Could he mean anything different this time?  No, he cannot! Intel already has started to target and terminate new hires in their probationary period. In many cases they extend the probation of new hires, (mostly RCGs) for three months, then get rid of them within that extended period.

It seems that Mr. Barrett and his management team sadistically enjoy luring these young souls into Intel's trap and later make them feel that they are in hell.  These cruel leaders do not care that in the process of satisfying their own insatiable greed they destroy the careers of these innocent RCGs in their infancy.

It was only a few months ago that Intel published the message below to all employees of Intel.  As you see they proudly bragged about its 42nd rank on Fortune Magazine's list of 100 best companies to work for. Mr. Fackler, Intel's Worldwide Employee Communications Director, claimed that Fortune Magazine ranked Intel 42nd because Intel did not "show any signs of cutting back on their commitment to employees.”  Tracy Koon, Intel's Director of Corporate Affair called Fortune Magazine's ranking: "a great testimony to our commitment to continuous improvement, and to our Intel value as a 'great place to work.' We are committed to doing even better next year."

Then exactly two months later on February 19, 2001, their fearless leader Mr. Barrett publishes the above announcement and gives a new meaning to Intel’s most advertised bogus value "Intel is a great place to work".  As you noticed Mr. Barrett’s announcement is full of cutting back on their commitment to employees.

If Fortune Magazine’s only criterion was "not cutting back on commitment to employees" and that is how they ranked Intel 42nd on its list of 100 best companies to work for, shouldn’t Fortune Magazine reconsider their decision and rank Intel as 42nd worst company to work for?

Working Woman Magazine, formerly known as Working Mothers Magazine every year publishes the list of 100 best companies for Working Mothers.  Intel has never made the list of 100 best companies to work for of Working Woman/Mothers Magazine.

You can find the list of this year’s 100 best companies at:

http://www.wwn.com:80/wwn/article.jsp?contentId=4337&ChannelId=208

Working Woman/Mothers Magazine says “These 100 companies were selected by Working Mother in recognition of their commitment to work/life balance.”  They also say “The 100 companies that made this year's list are today's leaders of that ongoing movement toward better benefits, more family and female-friendly policies, and a healthier, happier American workforce.”

Obviously Working Woman/Mothers Magazine cannot be fooled and they can better recognize the ongoing orchestration of Intel’s shenanigans.

Intel Wins High Marks as One of America's Best Employers
Posted December 19, 2000;  WW52
From Gary D. Fackler, Worldwide Employee Communications

Despite a global softening in demand for technology products, Intel has received high marks from the editors of Fortune magazine as being among U.S. companies that "show no signs of cutting back on their commitment to employees." Fortune ranked Intel 42nd, an improvement from the company's 1999 ranking of 65th among the magazine's top 100.

On Being a Good Corporate Citizen

In addition to solid rankings as an employer of choice, Intel consistently ranks highly in its charitable contributions. Worth magazine ranked the company 12th most generous among companies who contributed to worthy causes in 1999, based mostly on the company's education initiatives.

Said the editors, "Most of Intel's charitable contributions support science and technology education in the form of scholarships, fellowships and grants to non-profit organizations and employee volunteer programs. The company recently launched the Intel Teach to the Future program, which will train 400,000 teachers in 20 countries to incorporate computers and technology into school curricula. Intel plans to contribute $100 million to the program over a three-to-five-year period."

Intel leaders say they are pleased at the Fortune ranking, and especially that Intel moved up 23 places in just one year.

Tracy Koon, Intel Director of Corporate Affairs, calls the ranking "a great testimony to our commitment to continuous improvement, and to our Intel value as a 'great place to work.' We are committed to doing even better next year."

In compiling its rankings, Fortune noted that preferred employers typically have the attitude: "nice perks may help somewhat in recruiting, but to keep people here we've got to demonstrate that we offer a culture where they are respected and treated as adults, one that shows people that we really care about them."

The rankings were gleaned from surveys of more than 36,000 employees at the 234 candidate companies in Fortune's Great Place to Work Trust Index. The survey focused on trust in management, employee pride and camaraderie.

The 100 top-ranked companies represented a wide range of industries and geographic locales, although California headed the rankings with 21 of the top 100 companies being based there.

Topping this year's list was Dallas, Tex.-based The Container Store, a retailer of boxes and shelving.

From A Current Intel Employee:

To Face Intel
Commitment, Commitment, Commitment!!! To their employs...
If I hear that word one more time. They don't know what that mean.  Cut backs. They are good when you need them and there's not doubt that business is down, but why do they get themselves in this position to have to do this in the first place.
Because when things are good, they go nuts!! They hire 100 a week in every site when they really don't need the headcount. They spend money in travel etc that they don't need to spend. It's like my mother use to tell me "put a little away for a rainy day". We all know they get here sooner or later.  I remember reading the article about Intel being in the top 'great place to work'? How can you get there when 40 some % of the population have been there less then 2 years. This doesn't indicate, "Best place to work" to me. I would
expect to see 75 % of the population been there of 10 years or something.  One of the things that I'm sure got them on that list at all is the benefits. I'm also sure that the fact they announced giving us all computers
a year ago had something to do with that. What a benefit you say!!

Let me tell you non-intel people...most of us have not yet seen a computer and it's been one year already. And let me tell you something else: We finally got to the point of getting them and the very week you were eligible to order them, they pulled the plug on the program!!! Oh but, if you were smart and ordered them in the first 3 days of that week you might get one.  If you didn't, and waited because you were working your butt off at the office (for them), you now have to wait until 2002.  Boy!! What a benefit.  They stopped the program right in the middle of the deployment so that some get them and some don’t!! The way I see that is that this was budgeted for and planned for over a year and should have had the funds to fund it at any time. So what happened to that money?

Commitment? Does that mean they are watching out for the employees that will be put into the pool because their dept. has closed down (due to reorganizations caused by this hard times) and there is  nowhere for them to go? I know people that were on their probation and they have let them go for
basically no reason. Oh... they'll give you some Politically correct answer to that. But they are easy people to "target" and lower their headcount from.  Commitment? Have to ask people to give up their raised and work harder? But those big bosses got their hundreds of thousands dollar bonus here in January however. So just what is Commitment to Intel? I've been there 20 years and I sure don't know.
